Book Review: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (ねじまき鳥クロニクル)

Image
Haruki Murakami is a great writer. He writes to find an answer. I don't know what is the answer that he's been looking for, but for each one of his journeys, one thing that he always offers to his readers: solitude. It grows stronger in every book of his that I manage to read. All of the main characters are isolated or accidentally plan to isolate from the society.  Toru Okada is pretty much living the life of a lonesome wanderer. He enjoys living alone, even after the sudden leave of his wife and cat. He is pleased enough to jump into the well and sit in it for countless hours. As much as he feels sad about the abruptness that happened to his life, deep inside the well, he is happy enough to spend more hours in the well of an abandoned house in his neighbourhood.  Just like most of his books, Murakami is positioning himself in each one of his characters, who is aimless. No purpose to go. No destination to reach. Toru's life is basically like a flowing river. He ju...

The Danish Girl Book Review

Image
It's been eon since the last time I posted about book review, although not small number of books I read during the absence. It all goes to my goodreads' account . Check them out! So I've been using this paid app, where I can read a lot of books! Yeay! It's never a lonely life on commuter line with this app. And I just finished reading the eBook version of The Danish Girl, which currently set up as the object of upcoming literature project with a good friend of mine. But then I thought of having the book... So I bought this. This book is adapted to a movie, with the same title, played by Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander I watched the movie first, and of course it was good. Eddie Redmayne never fails to impress. At some points I can find his hidden identity through his acting, which is pretty much cool! Long story short, here is the book review of The Danish Girl... Before we get into this book, I'd like to ask you to pause in order to make su...

An Analysis of Feminism Perspectives Depicted in Mad Max: Fury Road Movie

Movie is considered as modern form of literature. Apart of the ability to formerly convey what was depicted inside the novel, prose, play, or poem (movie adaptation), movies nowadays can stand alone as purely new form of literature. The making progress of movie involves such ability, which also includes writing, interpreting, reading, and acting. The only written form of a movie is the script. This is why movie nowadays is considered as a new form of literary work which can stand alone.  Moreover, movies are not only using interpreted written text as the way to visualize what is inside the story, but also be supported by sound effect, which tremendously make movies a priority choice in spending leisure time by so many people or moviegoers. It is much quicker and easier. Apparently people who pick movies than books do not want their time to be spent by reading a thick book. This is also why some movie makers out there consider producing their own movies which are not adapted fr...

Book Review: Gender Trouble

Image
Date started reading: Early 2015 Date finished reading: 12 February 2015 Ebook version (free) This book does not do that much to my life. I am a girl with straight sexual orientation. It does not mean I can't read it, right? I read this book months ago when I was compiling my thesis, which is entitled An Analysis of Gender Stereotypes and Performativity in Brave Movie. This Gender Performativity is a new phrase, spoken by Judith Butler. And this book helps me to see better about patriarchal system, which has already prevented women, or matriarchal system to rule. Then why do we see gay people then? If these cavemen think women should be submissive, weak and fragile, while men are built to be the strong, bold, and brave ones, then what about these people who were born as male (genitally) but they tend to cry and have more sensitive feelings compared to women? Aren't they counted as 'normal' people too? Because we know, this gendered people also come with a set...

Discussing Feminist (Again)! :)

Image
I told you in the course of this paper that Shakespeare had a sister; but do not look for her in Sir Sidney Lee’s life of the poet. She died young—alas, she never wrote a word. She lies buried where the omnibuses now stop, opposite the Elephant and Castle. Now my belief is that this poet who never wrote a word and was buried at the cross–roads still lives. She lives in you and in me, and in many other women who are not here to–night, for they are washing up the dishes and putting the children to bed. But she lives; for great poets do not die; they are continuing presences; they need only the opportunity to walk among us in the flesh. -- Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own (1929) I've been reading some various feminist articles as I am going to compile some feminist perspectives that I found in Mad Max movie with the help of some of my goodreads friends. The feminist issue is all over the place if you ever watch it. And I am sure I once read this remarkable piece of Woolf's,...

Book Review: The Secret Garden

Image
Date Finished Reading: January 2013 Ebook Version (Free) Finally I have time to rewrite my old review of The Secret Garden from my Goodreads account. This book review is important. Apart of a must-read book, The Secret Garden plays important role in enriching classic works at the time. So I am sure some of people who are keen into literature wouldn't miss this one. And I feel the need to make its review. Let's begin! I read the ebook version of it. *sobbing* I need to save a lot of money to buy the hardback version of it. It is so expensive, yet so beautiful I want to cry. T-T But the ebook version was fine. Well-edited. For your information, if you happened to have an ebook reader application on your smartphone, the ebook version of The Secret Garden is given for free. I am amazed (always) by the beautifully-written lines this book offers you. They give you this idyllic feeling that you would never find in any modern or young-adult genre of books (exactly). That is the...

Book Review: A Place Called Here

Image
Date started reading it: August 04, 2015 Date finished reading it: August 09, 2015 Sometimes, people can go missing right before our very eyes. Sometimes, people discover you, even though they've been looking at you the entire time. Sometimes, we lose sight of ourselves when we're not paying enough attention.  ........

Jane Austen's Works Sucker!

Image
So I finally have my book order arrived safely! I ordered Mansfield Park from The Book Depository and have waited impatiently until it landed safely yesterday. This book is in Clothbound series of Penguin classic publishing, so it is normal for bragging it, don't you think? I am waiting for The Woman in White to be the first gothic classic work on my shelf, in this series too.

Book Review: The Little Prince

Image
Books offer you different experiences if you are willing to spend time rereading it. The very first time I read it, was it 4 years ago? And I did not understand partly, because I was not knowledgeable enough to indulge any classics work at the time. As for now, I find myself hooked up by this Little Prince who is long for his only 4- petal flower protected in a glass dome whilst he has his journey to different planets. I find this book is meaningful. It was written long time ago, and yet it is so appealing to today's condition. How come? Did the world ever change? Did people actually ever change?  This book is highly relatable to our life, isn't it? This book is published in 1943. Written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, this book remains popular even today. It has sold over a million copies a year. It was also voted as the best French book of the 20th century. It is still, in fact, one of the best selling books of ALL TIME (mind the caps lock, please). You really don't ...

Favorite Genre: Classics!

Image
After waiting for almost 3 weeks, I have finally held The Little Prince copy! I get it from Book Depository. I bought it for only $3.90 ! Cool, right! I have found that indulging myself and getting lost in deep thought while reading classics works is so worth all of your money and time. It is like you throw yourself back to the time when people had no time for leisuring, yet they created amazing works that are still appealing to today's condition. I have always been hooked by classics. I think I have read some from Bronte sisters, but you know, if you are a bibliophile, you surely do not want to not having the hardback copies of all of classics works. Like, you know, you really should start piling them up so you can inherit valuable, meaningful books to your kids in the future. But hardback copies are so damn pricey, however they are all worth your money. Like seriously...

My Obsession Towards Penguin Classic Books

Image
Normally, I would go for paperbacks for modern or contemporary genre. But it is otherwise for classic works! A hardback of any of pre-WWI literature is worth to possess! I collect some money to buy the hardback ones for several Jane Austen's works. While waiting for my hardbacks come in mailbox, let's enjoy gazing some from scrolling down tumblr so that my thirst be satisfied (for a while). They are so beautiful, I'm gonna die!!!! 

Congo Review

Hello! Ohayo! This is Congo review, an adventurous book by Michael Crichton. I have such experience, lovely one, what I mean is. I actually have got the copy from my ex, who lives an ocean away from Indonesia, exactly in Oregon, USA. So this book means a lot 'cause it is his favorite. I asked him to give me the copy as the gift when he visited me two years ago. Soooo, check it out!  I started reading it in April, 2014 and finished it by the end of the month.

The Blackstone Key Review

So this is The Blackstone Key review that I just had time to post it. I copied it from my goodreads' account, so that is why it took me some minutes after adding some other lines to finish it off. But, here is the review. There would never be any spoiler. Well, only a little. You need (not) to worry. Read from August 10 to December 19, 2014 The Blackstone Key by Rose Melikan What a slow-paced story... I kind of understand that this is actually her debut novel, but this mystery book based in 18th century of England is just too slow to indulge. It was boring in the beginning, very laid back and somehow dissatisfying in resolution. However, I review this book by putting aside my 'sexist' side and thus, I find Mary Finch is a typical gothic heroine. She is brave for a young lady at the time. She gets curious at every little thing. A sweet young maiden but very bright and likeable young lady, Mary Finch is.

The Catcher in the Rye Review

So, this is it.  The Catcher in the Rye review that I made as soon as I finished the last page of the book. Check it out! "All the two of them were eating for breakfast was toast and coffee. That depressed me. I hate it if I'm eating bacon and eggs or something and somebody else is only eating toast and coffee."  I hope you guys can get something enlightening from the quote I cited from this book. Yes, meet Holden Caulfield, a poor little rich boy with a lot of attitude and lot of dated profanity. All I can say from what he said about the nuns he met is he really does have generosity attitude. He feels guilty about being a rich kid. It can be seen from his explanation about his possession of Mark Cross suitcases and the mentioned job of his dad, who is a corporation lawyer. And, he also bounces between expensive boarding schools, which is not cheap. He really is a nice guy. This book basically speaks about himself, with first person of pov, Holden himse...

A Birthday Gift Comes Early

Image

An Analysis of Gender Stereotypes and Performativity in Brave Movie

Here is the chapter 4 of my thesis, An Analysis of Gender Stereotypes and Performativity in Brave Movie. For the complete version of it, check it through my Academia.edu profile .  CHAPTER IV  FINDING AND ANALYSIS This chapter is divided into three sub chapters, for each of it discussed about the statements of problems stated in Chapter 1. Using Brave movie as the object of observation, this chapter is then used to display the findings along with the analysis solved through ‘dissecting’ the intrinsic and extrinsic elements of the selected movie. To ease the analysis, a brief of synopsis about Brave movie is necessary. It is an original story written by co-director Brenda Chapman. This movie was released by Pixar and then continued with Disney Picture on June 10, 2012 in United States. This movie is set in Scotland, right in a rugged and mythical time. It features Merida as an aspiring archers and impulsive daughter of royalty. She makes a careless ...
