Book Review: Little Women

Image
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott  Read from June 24 to September 11, 2015 Ebook version (free) So much feelings going on right after finishing this book. I read the Puffin n Bloom by Rifle edition, so it is smaller on the size and thick. I read it for almost 5 months. Daebak. But then again, I try to write this book review, although I am not really happy with the ending.  So, Little Women in a nutshell... It tells us about strong sisterhood and how it results in feminism perspectives depicted along the way. The little women are Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. They used to be rich, but in the story they express how miserable it is to be poor. I feel quite discontented by the fact these characters are soooo desperate in handling their economy problems. Like, okay I get it, this story comes when the background condition was not that good (WW II), but still, they are so desperate to be rich. The way the author speaks it sounds too childish.

An Analysis of Feminism Perspectives Depicted in Mad Max: Fury Road Movie

Movie is considered as modern form of literature. Apart of the ability to formerly convey what was depicted inside the novel, prose, play, or poem (movie adaptation), movies nowadays can stand alone as purely new form of literature. The making progress of movie involves such ability, which also includes writing, interpreting, reading, and acting. The only written form of a movie is the script. This is why movie nowadays is considered as a new form of literary work which can stand alone.  Moreover, movies are not only using interpreted written text as the way to visualize what is inside the story, but also be supported by sound effect, which tremendously make movies a priority choice in spending leisure time by so many people or moviegoers. It is much quicker and easier. Apparently people who pick movies than books do not want their time to be spent by reading a thick book. This is also why some movie makers out there consider producing their own movies which are not adapted fr...

Thesis Examination!

What is life actually? All I know about it is full of surprise. Even at this second I'm writing this post, I still could not realize how far I have managed living my life for almost 25 years. Since I was born, went to kindergarten, elementary, junior and senior high school, until now, at this very moment, I am about to face a new graduation thing.  I would face a thesis examination soon! I could not be happier than I am today. In addition to having jolly stuff in my stomach, I feel scared too. It is a new thing. And it is not merely an examination. It is a big deal for me and my family. Whenever I write down 'family' I always have this teary moment 'cause all I want is to be the one to be proud of. To be the source of happiness. To be able to be called as 'the most' one of all.  Now I have been checking my thesis for hours. Like I add some and then remove it down. Like I feel I am in the middle of readiness and unpreparedness. I cannot tell the po...

An Analysis of Punk Subculture In the Sex Pistols’ Song; God Save the Queen based on Cultural Studies

With the aim to add more understanding about analyzing a literary work using a specific literary criticism, I would like to present this paper, which is entitled An Analysis of Punk Subculture in Sex Pistols’ Song; God Save the Queen based on Cultural Studies to all of you. Speaking about cultural studies, it can be risky to use it as the tool to dissect this song. Why? It is because there will be a lot of things that can be found in only one literary work that is analyzed, while the chance to get the point is inevitable. Imagine cutting a meat with a lot of kinds of knives. It happened exactly the same when I analyzed this selected song from the most phenomenal punk rock band from UK.

The Era of Puritanism (1564-1660): Literary Works

Image
The reign of the Puritans also produce a large amount of literature (poetry, prose), but drama could not thrive because it is prohibited by the authorities. Drama regarded as a nest of immorality by the Puritan authorities. It is just so different with Elizabeth period where drama produces a lot of outstanding works. So we can see that the literary works of Puritan period are just different from Elizabeth period. In period of Puritan literature, there are three groups of poems; metaphysical, cavalier and Puritan. Here are the complete version of the era of Puritanism (1564-1660): Literary Works. Poetry We can find poems in this period are way too different from the previous one. We may even call the literary in this period as the depression kind of expression. If in Elizabethan period we know some greatest poets like Edmund Spenser, Philip Sidney, George Chapman and Thomas Sackville who each of them expressing their emotions through their works. The emotions here are like t...

The Era of Puritanism (1564-1660): Society Background

Image
Society Background This period were having some development phases just like the previous period, Elizabethan. The opposite look from Elizabeth period can be seen clearly from a lot of internal conflicts happened at the time. The social society background surely affected the literature side, so you can see that most of literary works at this period were accentuating the depressed and gloomy sides of the world. It is just different with Elizabeth period. But what do you know about puritan actually? Puritanism was a religious reform movement that arose within the Church of England in the late sixteenth century. If we bring this word back to our era, we can find in any dictionary that puritan means someone who obeys to strict religious principles; someone opposed to sensual pleasures. If we find a group of religious people who think that living lavishly and secularism is not a good thing in life, then they can be considered as puritan. Now, if we go back to the era where this word came...

Finally... Alhamdulillah...

I haven't faced it yet.  What is it actually? It is an half-final examination of being an English letter's scholar for almost 4 years. Tomorrow is a big day, indeed! I am going to present my thesis proposal, which is entitled Feminism Analysis of Gender Stereotypes and Performativity in Mulan and Brave Movies.   Wish me tons of luck, fellas! I feel like floating in the air. Half of my body is deflating. I have mixed feelings ranging from anxious, exhausted, frightened and nervous, of course! I still feel like I have nothing inside le brain, yet I have made it. My thesis proposal has been examined with the board of examiners. They are okay with it. My other two friends and I have hurried ourselves in compiling our proposals. We are not being cocky for what we have achieved, yet some haters are still making up this thing as a huge thing. Well, I can say nothing for this kind of behavior. Whether they have bad attitude or what, I really don't give a damn about it....

Macbeth

Image
After reading Macbeth story from the masterpiece of drama in Elizabeth period, William Shakespeare, I honestly can say that women can be as poisonous as venom for men's lives. You can see how cruel Lady Macbeth in polluting Macbeth's mind which used to be as plain as milk of human kindness. Macbeth was a nice man until he met the three witches and got good prophecies about his future. He would be the Thane of Cawdor and also be the King of Scotland, the prophecies said. He was in despair at that time whether to throw away the plan that Lady Macbeth told him or regret it because he misses the chance to get the throne. After all, in the end both Macbeth and his lady were dead and the order of the throne for Scotland is restored. Since it is a tragic story, which Shakespeare made this story in his second period when it was called as his depressed time ever, so do not expect it will end in happy-ending. But we can learn something in between. There must be someth...
