13 Reasons Why You Can't Chill About 'Thirteen Reasons Why'

SPOILER ALERT! If You Haven't Read/Watched 13 Reasons Why, THEN STOP HERE!
As you know from the title, I need to warn you one more time. If you don't have any clue about this viral thing going on on Netflix, called 13 Reasons Why grabbed from the same title of a young adult fiction book written by Jay Asher, MOVE ALONG. Continue living that perfect life of yours...

Because I'm about to change that 'perfect life' perspective from the post, I entitle to;

13 Reasons Why You Can't Chill About 'Thirteen Reasons Why'

First thing first, it is only my review. Who am I actually? Nobody. So need no worry, none of the writings here deserve your credence or trust.

Second, I assume you know about 13 Reasons Why which has recently got adapted to a TV show hosted by Netflix. The story is about a girl who committed suicide and apparently got bullied. So she recorded 13 tapes which each one of it includes a name or reason why she did that killing. And those people found out about this after she died. Spoiler: she kinda blames her suicidal act to these 13 guys.

Third, I read the book first on my Kindle, long before Selena Gomez decided to be an executive producer for the TV show. Well, spoiler... I do not recommend you to buy the book. It looks promising at first, but what lies on it, page by page is disturbing and sickening up to the end. Glad it was only $ 5.16 on Amazon and an ebook. What can I expect from YA genre? It's just it went viral because of its uniqueness and Selena Gomez, I guess...

So, let's start the tapes, well I mean the list...

1st. The Attitude:
Hannah's attitude is quite something. She looks smart, indeed a beautiful girl. A perfect girl, unless I can make you sure she is not into religious stuff. If so, she wouldn't kill herself in the first place. Well okay, it's just that she is too naive. Her attitude shows that neither she is truly an angel or just a naive girl who never learns. She lost senses. She appears strong, while inside, she is weak, easily offended by small stuff. Her presuppositions are just wrong, all the time. What I've known is, a senseless person is actually a selfish one who only wants all of the attention on her. Hannah has that tendency, especially when she crashed Bryce Walker's party, which ended up in her, being raped by this rich, baseball jock. And, she has a bad taste in boys. Seriously, why can't she spot a jerk like Justin Foley in the first place, who started this bullying stuff happening on her? He is also her BF's ex-boyfriend, Kat who recently moved from their neighbourhood. Why can't she learn that after the incident happened at the park with Justin, she shouldn't trust anyone from his groups, anymore? Then why did she trust Marcus? Don't you have any 'face', to see those jerks again? Why did she crash Bryce's party too? She should have learned from the first bad experience with Justin Foley.

2nd. Complicated Structure (The Book):
As from the book, there are 2 point-of-view of voices; Hannah and Clay. Clay is a boy she fell in love with, but because of EXTREMELY OVER DRAMATIC character, she failed to confess or even give hints (like duh, it's 2017!). These voices alternate and sometimes are interrupted somehow, mostly in the most ridiculous places. I should reread over and over again to remember exactly what the previous narrator said. Just... tiring.

3rd. Her Reasons to End Her Life:
So she has 13 reasons why she committed suicide when actually she has 13 people who were responsible behind of her action. It is just silly. These people are not like physically bullying her, like beating her up to death or something. It is their words, actions (like when Bryce squeezed her ass or rape her) that lead Hannah to a decision to kill herself, and that is quite idiotic for me. The first problem is when she shared her first kiss with Justin, who publicly shared to the rest of the school that they went to 2nd base (like fingering her pussy, stuff like that), while in fact, it was a lie. The second problem is when her best friend stopped talking to her, just because of this stupid friend, Jessica, was in love with Justin (pretty idiotic, right?). The third problem is when she was listed as a girl in school with BEST ASS, leading the jocks, or jerks to hardly ignore her ass and sexually mock about it. The fourth problem is when she has a new girlfriend, which turned out as gay (Courtney). They were caught kissing under alcohol influence and then Tyler (one of the names included on her tapes) captured the scene and spread the picture to the school. Tyler loved her, but because of her cockiness which made his heart broken into pieces, he decided to spread the picture. Hannah is plain STUPID like she doesn't live in today's world. I assume she lives in 2017 because she teased her mother with Fifty Shades of Mother. Come on... For your information, these problems are mostly experienced by almost every teenager in the USA. It happens around the globe too. So she is no different than other problematic teens, yet she decides to kill herself and blame these people in return.

4th. Her Imputations:
She accuses not only her friends at school but also a teacher, Mr Porter. Why I cannot chill about this is, she doesn't even get things straight when she had a face-to-face conversation with Mr Porter. She is easily disappointed while mumbling, not clearly speak what really happened to her. Okay, she doesn't have an evidence and Mr Porter's words are somehow losing her trust to tell the whole story. But he just asked. In the series, he is the type of counsellor who likes to ask, instead of giving a statement. It is important for a counsellor, so he doesn't quickly judge. BUT Hannah is easily pissed off with small stuff. Instead of telling him the whole story, she decided to get out of his office. She acts as if the world owes her something. That the world has pushed her to kill herself when she could have just ASKED for HELP. The show is glorifying her actions, which make me unable to chill. She should reflect more, instead of blaming people.

5th. Clay is Excluded:
Oh, apparently Clay is the 11th of the list. And he is not one of the reasons why Hannah killed herself. She fell in love, in the end, with him who is always there while she busied herself with jerks. Yes, Hannah has a real bad taste in boys. She is portrayed as a cheap girl in the show. The question is then, why Clay is excluded? Why he also got the tapes? Is she some kind of attention seekers? Why burden an innocent boy like Clay with her complicated life? If she is truly in love with Clay, she would have known that since the first time she saw him. Instead, she went out with Justin. I think she talks to Clay is only because no one does that. Taken for granted, huh.

6th. Her, Being Malevolent:
A person who decides to kill herself either send goodbye letters or just die quietly. It is their choices after all. It is different with Hannah. From her tapes/recordings, I can sense satirical, sarcastic, and resentful words. You know, like an evil character who laughs creepily when they come up with evil ideas. She seems like hating all of the people in the tapes without strong reasons, including Clay, the man she likes. She only cares about how people treat her bad, not reflecting on what she did wrong. Maybe the way she speaks. As far as I know from the show, Hannah is kind of acting like a smartass, ignorant, and heartless witch. She never shows any excitement towards something. She always has dark, grey clouds above hear head. You will hate her from the first episode when she asked Kat for Justin. It is not she is moody or gloomy. Worse than that, she is pretty ignorant. And I couldn't feel sorry for what happened to her.

7th. The Tapes:
Clay is the slowest! While the other 12 persons can finish the tapes in one sitting, he is the last one to figure out shits. What makes it even weirder is why can't the other bad people, according to Hannah, escape or run away from the trouble? Clay does the hard job, following the first person until the last person mentioned on that tape only to ask bad things that Hannah accuse on the tape. Of course, they would be in the stage of denial. Just fucked up. Clay acts innocent and just plain stupid sometimes.

8th. Overdramatic:
I read and watched the show until the very last episode, and each one of accusation, regret and anger are overdramatic. Why? Because either the book and show are showing these dark moods and sad tones. I hope for the peak, which would blow out my mind until it leads to the best reason for Hannah to commit suicide. But it never came. I was like, what the fuck? The book didn't say that Hannah was raped, but the show said differently. Her family is unstable too, in the show. She is not stupid, she is just ignorant sometimes. To put it simply, she is being a drama Queen to get all of the people's attentions who left her behind. Sounds like someone? Eh?

9th. No Parents Spotted:
Book and TV show portrays a different story about her parents. In the book, there is no sign of parents at all, while in the show, hers and Clay's are getting a lot of scenes. But. I cannot chill when finding out that Hannah's parents are not that rich, yet she doesn't understand their struggles in running a small drugstore. She doesn't blame her, yet she makes as if she has no parents.

10th. Apathy:
Hannah thinks people can read mind, hers to be more specific. She expects her friends to behave the way a nun always do; simply not making any mistakes. She is kind of wanting people to behave the way she wants. And I cannot chill when finally Hannah and Clay are making out in Jessica's room, but then she repels him. I mean, WHY? Just WHY? She doesn't seek for help, and I don't think she really wants help. Why can't she tell Clay about everything? He really wants to help her, whatever drama that she's walking on. Yet, this drama queen is too cocky and delusional. I think she is simply just apathetic and bored with her life.

11th. The Blame:
Each of the blame that Hannah did be the consequences of her wrong decisions. Imagine if she never let Marcus' invitation to the Dollar Valentine? It's pretty much her, being plainly naive, until she is trapped in a bad situation, and that's it. Yet she blames the tragic things happened to her to these 13 people. Just pretty ridiculous, in my opinion. What about reflecting more? And just be careful. Praise herself by ignoring and avoiding Justin's circle.

12th. The Genre:
This reason is very personal. The book is categorised as a Young Adult genre, so I don't hate it, nor I like reading it.

13th. Tony:
I don't get the reason why Tony is included to this devious circle. I want more of his story. Why can't he break his promise? For many times Clay asks about his tape to Tony, but he never tells the truth.

The show is pretty much showing 13 mistakes and bad decisions made by Hannah Baker. Is she a donkey, because she always traps in the same hole over and over again. I cannot chill because there is no sign of her seeking for help. Since the show is watched by numerous amount of teenagers around the globe, I think the show should slip it somehow. So that these teens, who are suicidal, can think twice about ending their life and seek for help, instead.

What do you think? But the show is quite addicting. I watched it in one sitting.

Book: I don't recommend, but if you want to read it, borrow from a friend.
TV show: You'll get clearer perspectives of each one of the characters. But I can make you sure, you'll get pissed off easily by Hannah in the show. Katherine Langford is a good actress.
